The National Alliance for Meanwhile Use unites diverse stakeholders to unlock value from underused property.
Who we are
The National Alliance for Meanwhile Use brings together the not-for-profit, property and development sector, universities, community housing providers, social entrepreneurs, philanthropy and other stakeholders with a shared interest in unlocking the social, economic and environmental value of underutilised property.
Why we exist
- Unlock the social, economic and environmental value of underutilised property across Australia
- Promote Meanwhile Use as a practical and scalable approach to activating vacant land, buildings and infrastructure
- Accelerate the use of underutilised assets as safe, temporary housing solutions (primary focus) and community use
- Strengthen pathways into long-term housing for people experiencing, at risk of, or transitioning out of homelessness
Our Vision
A future where every vacant property creates social impact and value.
Where vacant and underutilised spaces are recognised as valuable community assets, creating opportunities for housing, social impact, economic participation, creativity, education and community connection.
Housing
Temporary homes that provide stability while permanent housing is secured.
Community
Spaces that strengthen neighbourhoods and local organisations.
Social Impact
Buildings that deliver measurable outcomes instead of sitting empty.
Partnership
Property owners and community organisations working together.
Become part of the Meanwhile Use Platform and bring Australia’s empty spaces back to life.
Who is involved
Meanwhile Use brings vacant and underused spaces back to life, creating social, cultural and economic benefit where it’s needed most. It opens doors for charities to grow their services, supports government to activate communities and reduce the cost of inactivity, and helps asset owners safeguard properties while contributing to real, measurable good.
